Summary

Enriched or descriptive subtitling is a new designation for what is usually known as Subtitling for Deaf and Hard-of-hearing audiences (SDH) or captioning. The change in terminology wishes to reflect an audience that goes much beyond viewers with hearing impairment.

This intensive hands-on workshop took participants from theoretical understandings to practical outcomes. Staged across six working days, it provided professional translators with multiple activities, which included talks and presentations, practical exercises, online chats and staged projects to allow for collaborative and individual learning. Participants were required to engage actively throughout the sessions, which were conducted in English. However, practical exercises were carried out in English and Romanian. By the end of the course, 12 animated films were subtitled in Romanian. A selection of 6 were screened publicly so as to gather feedback from both the hearing and the d/Deaf community in Bucharest.

The team followed the training with the writing up of basic guidelines for the Romanian context.
