Summary
2nd year students in the MA in Audiovisual Translation Program (MAAT) at CHSS-HBKU engaged with Qatar National Library to make an upcoming art exhibition accessible to blind visitors. The cultural offer opened to the public on October 13 and was a major attraction during the World Cup. The exhibition comprised of 32 paintings drawn by elementary school children, showing their interpretation of the 8 World Cup stadiums.
The mediation services provided by CHSS included a descriptive audioguide (42 stops), which was made available on-site and online. A total of 45 minutes of soundscaped audio descriptions, in English and in Arabic. MAAT students and faculty scripted the text that was voiced by students, faculty, QNL staff, and members of the blind community.
The exhibition was further enriched by texts in Braille and large print, and high contrast simplified black and white images and 2 ½ D raised images for tactile exploration.
Special tours were arranged for schools and communities of persons with disabilities and supported by the MAAT students who developed the project.
